LZW36 Fan/Light Switch Canopy Module Disconnection Issues

Yeah, what we’ll likely do for those that cannot OTA via their hub’s is send out loaner Z-Sticks. Or, if you’d prefer us to update your module, we can either ship a new one out that we’ve flashed and you return the old one, or you can send in your old one and we’ll update it and send back. Whichever is easiest for you guys!

EDIT: This is assuming the Z-Wave switch is the issue. Unfortunately if it turns out to be a canopy issue, we’ll have to send out brand new units as the canopies cannot be OTA’d at this time. It was a choice we had to make in order to not have this project take an additional 3 months.

How did I know that the canopy modules could not be reliably flashed OTA? It feels like I’m stuck in a groundhog day loop!!!

.

I am testing the potential fix here too. I think i have an actual bad module with one of my switches though. It will turn the lights on and off but not the fan and it was working at one point.

I am over 24 hours and still up and running. I’m going to try to let it go overnight and see if it’s still going in the morning. If it is, I will try and overload it and see if I can force it to lose connection.

@Eric_Inovelli … The question about whether or not its paired with a hub for testing at the manufacturer is interesting … when I first installed my switch and powered the breaker back on, it worked perfectly; then 15 minutes later, when I paired it with my hub, the actual act of pairing it broke the connection to the canopy for the first time - it took me 10-15 minutes scratching my head as to why the fan wasn’t responding before I reset it.

As a test, has anyone here excluded the switch from their hubs to see how long it would run disconnected from the z-wave mesh?

Also, as an update, my switch has been connected to to the canopy for the last 9 hours (sometimes it seems to disconnect in under 2, so 9 is definitely a new record), but I haven’t implemented any changes to test - its all the same as it was yesterday … the only difference is that the outdoor temperature is down 10-15 degrees from the past few days as it has been overcast and raining all day, but the indoor temp is the same, so the hardware wouldn’t notice that directly.

Is your power monitoring disabled?

It is not … that may be one of my next tests, but I’m waiting for the next disconnect to change anything and see how long this goes.

Also trying the power monitoring fix. Have had no need to reset since deploying, but will keep monitoring.

@Eric_Inovelli, @vreihen, @EricM_Inovelli, well over 24 hours and still working I have loaded it up with commands all day and still connected!

Awesome – and all you’ve done is disabled power monitoring?

Maybe for everyone who’s disabled power monitoring, if it runs great for 72hrs, try turning power monitoring back on to see if it messes things up? What do you guys think?

I don’t mind trying this…for science =)

Same! Been running for over 24 Hours now. I disabled power monitoring on the 3 options and it has stayed connected.

I did have to shut off the breaker to the room today though as I’m remodeling the room, but it was after the 24 hour mark. I’ll continue to keep an eye on it now that the power is back on in the room. I also set my other 2 rooms to disable power monitoring as well.

Good idea! Will do!

@Eric_Inovelli, yes that was my intent. You are correct all I did was disable power reporting based on @vreihen’s suggestion.

Is it possible to disable the power via zwave/home assistant?

If you are using the default version of OZW built in to HA (version 1.4), you should be able to go into Configuration -> Z-Wave Control Panel -> Node Config Options.

You will want to set the following Parameters to 0:

  • 28: Active Power Reports
  • 29: Periodic Power & Energy Reports
  • 30: Energy Reports

So this morning all of my switches were still connected but once I turned the fan off in my bedroom, it would not come back on. This is with power monitoring disabled.

Unfortunately I think Im gonna have to return all 5 of my switches and wait to see if there is a fix. I dont want to be out any money and not be able to use my fans in the meantime.

We’ll extend our return policy on these as there is obviously some issue going on, however, I completely understand that patience is running out.

Question for you: is it just one fan giving you issues? If so, were they all giving you issues prior to energy monitoring being turned off or just this one in particular?

I have 1 fan that has always worked. 1 fan that worked for a while and then stopped working. Since turning off the power monitoring that fan appears to still be working. The 3rd fan in my bedroom worked, then disconnected, then only the lights would work, then yesterday after a reset everything worked and when I woke up I was able to turn the fans off but not back on again.

I’m willing to wait and see if you guys can fix these issues. I just dont want to miss my window for returns (which based on your frequent communications I dont think would happen.)
