3-Way Issue - ON/OFF's Only | (Wiring Correct, But Lights Not Behaving Properly)

I have been working with support (Nate) on an issue. They authorized sending the switch back for warranty replacement. I replaced the red switch with a new spare out of the box. Interesting in that this new switch had the exact same issues as the previous one. When I realized that this was happening to multiple switches, the issue must be something different than a defect in a single switch. I started looking at other items that could be an issue. The switches are running V1.21 The load are two fixtures, each with a single GE LED from the supported bulb list.

The replacement switch hasn’t been included in the zwave network yet and is running manually. Same symptom when the dumb switch is switched down and you turn off the circuit from the red switch, the circuit turns back on automagically in about 30 seconds.

To satisfy my own mind, I decided to trace and document the wiring.

The line is in the box with the red switch. The load is in the box with the dumb switch.

The red switch is wired as follows:

White – Neutral
Red – Traveler
Black – Line In
Black – Load to dumb switch

The dumb 3-way switch is wired as follow:

Common Black – Black load to lights
Top Brass – Black from red switch load
Bottom Brass – Red traveler from red switch

When the dumb switch is down, which connects the red traveler from the red switch to the load to the common load to the lights, is when this condition is met. When the circuit is turned off by the red switch, the circuit automagically turns itself back on in 30 seconds. The previous switch also exhibited the same traits including the same with it was turned off via Home Assistant.

When the dumb switch is up or connecting the load to the lights to the load line from the red switch, the red switch seems to work just fine.

I’m still working with support, but I though I would also post it here to see if anyone has experienced anything similar?

There have been a couple issues surrounding the switches used with dumb switches.

Have you tried temporarily swapping out the LED bulbs for incandescents? That is the quickest way to test if the bulbs are causing the issue.

Yes, incandescent bulbs have the same symptoms. Both switches are being RMA’d by Support.

I’m having a problem with a 3-way setup as well. I believe my wiring is correct, but the lights don’t work as expected.

Here are the questions to be answered from the original post:

Type of Switch: Red Series
Type of setup: 3 way
What schematic are you following: Line/Load in Same Box (Neutral Wire Setup)
How many bulbs are you controlling? 3
What type of bulbs are they: Sunco BR30 LED (11W)
Best guess as to how long the wiring is between switch(es) and bulb(s): From switch to first bulb is about 10ft

I know that the original wiring is slightly different from the schematic pictures, so perhaps there’s something that I am missing/doing wrong there, but the after schematic seems to match exactly, so I would think that it should work.

Here is what is happening currently:

Inovelli LED on - dumb switch can turn the lights on or off properly.
Turn off on inovelli side - lights dim about 50% but don’t fully turn off. LED indicates off
Turn on on inovelli side - lights return to full power. LED indicates on
Turn off on dumb switch side. Inovelli LED still indicates on
Try to turn on on inovelli side - nothing happens
Turn “off” on inovelli side - LED indicates off, but lights were already off
Turn on on dumb switch side - lights turn on but to 50% power like in #2. inovelli LED indicates off
Turn “on” on inovelli side - lights return to full power and LED indicates on

I would expect that I could turn on the lights with the dumb switch, have the Inovelli LED indicate on…then turn it off on the inovelli (with the lights actually turning off) and the LED indicating off. And vice versa, if the Inovelli turns it on (and LED indicates on), then turning off with the dumb switch should have Inovelli LED indicate off.

Any help is much appreciated!

UPDATE: I was able to get this working properly.

First, I found out you need to set the switch to work in a neutral and 3-way setup (following the instructions here). However, I was still having trouble with the switch not working properly.

Second, I had another brand new inovelli switch lying around that I hadn’t installed yet, so I tried swapping it out for the first one I used. After following the instructions to configure it for my setup, it’s working properly.

So, I’m not clear what was wrong with my first switch, but I’ll have to work with inovelli support to fix it or replace it. In any case, my problem is now resolved.

You may want to factory rest (config button for 20+ seconds)your first switch and try in another location.

I will give that a try. During my troubleshooting initially, I did do a factory reset once or twice with no success. But I could have been doing things in the wrong order, so I will give it a shot the next time I have some free time. thanks for the suggestion!

@harjms I tried installing the “bad” switch in a new location today. I followed the same “Line/Load in Same Box (Neutral Wire Setup)” as before, factory reset the switch, then programmed the options required for Neutral setup and 3-way with Dumb switch. Happily, it’s working now! Almost…

If the dumb switch is in the up position, the inovelli switch works as it should and successfully turns on and off the light (I can hear the little click when it does it). However, if the dumb switch is in the down position, the inovelli switch won’t turn the light all the way off…it dims a bit but doesn’t actually cut power to it (and I don’t hear the click). It still turns on properly, and the dumb switch always works.

Is this something wrong with the wiring or would this be something with the switch itself, do you know?

What is the load? LED bulb? Temporarily swap in (an) incandescent(s) and see if you get proper operation.

@Bry it’s a chandelier type light in our foyer, but it already has 3 incandescent bulbs in it, so I assume there’s enough load (unlike with LEDs)

Yep, that would be enough load to test what I was thinking.

Double check to insure the dimmer is actually off. Best way is use the hub to turn the dimmer off. Sometimes a down paddle press results in a dim action instead of a turn off action.

Hi @Bry – Yep I’ve tested using the hub and get the same results. It seems to dim about half way. It does the same thing when it properly turns off, but instead of dimming down then clicking off, it just dims down and stays there.

Ok…I thought maybe it could be defective, I have a support ticket open with Inovelli, hopefully they can confirm and replace it for me. Thanks for the help to confirm nothing is setup incorrectly!

Having an issue where the lights turn themselves back on after a second or two of being turned off. When I use one type of LED bulb the lights stay off (but dimly lit) and the other type of bulb the lights turn back on after a second or two.

How many bulbs are you controlling?

What type of bulbs are they (manufacturer/model#/type - ie: Philips, xxxx1234 model, BR30)

Simply Conserve L409A1927K (dimly lit)
Noma 33956-052-7055-4 (turns back on)

Best guess as to how long the wiring is between switch(es) and bulb(s)

20 - 30 feet
