Thought this was an interesting announcement. Curious what you all think!
So now our phones can speak directly to our Zigbee devices without a hub? Seems to be muddying the waters… with Matter in early release I’d much prefer the CSA focus on that. Thread and BLE are natively supported by Matter, so I expect it’ll offer much the same interoperability as Zigbee Direct (more, even). My response in two words: why bother?
Hmmm… looks like a way to try to keep Zigbee alive in the world of Matter. Since, Matter over Thread hardware will have usually Bluetooth radios and the Thread radio can support the Zigbee protocol in many cases. There is likely to be a lot of devices that are flashed back and forth between protocols to make more SKUs. Some engineer saw this and said, “Hey why not use Bluetooth to communicate with non-Zigbee devices since it’s gonna be there for Matter/Thread support anyways?”
