What does swallowing ladders cure, exactly?
Ok, seriously now. It sounds like the smart bulbs you are offering are better than other offerings and solve at least some of the issues with combining smart bulbs and smart switches. That’s great. The decision to essentially offer free bulbs with a pack of switches makes sense, but it should not come as a surprise if some of us are less than excited by the offer. Smart bulbs are just not on my automation radar right now. I made the conscious decision early on to not bother with them, for the time being. So getting bulbs is a potential benefit that may come about in the future, when I get around to learning how the bulbs work and how to integrate them with the rest of my automation. The benefit is not automatic, I have to work to realize it. And it so happens I have precious little time right now to devote to figuring out smart bulbs. So they’d probably sit on a shelf for a while.
It so happens our kitchen stove died a few weeks ago, so we’ve been shopping. Prior to the start of the Black Friday sales we picked a stove that fits out needs, but I told my wife we should wait a bit because we may benefit from Black Friday… and I was right. The manufacturer has lowered the price by about $1000 compared to the out-the-door price when there is no sale. (And no, we’re not talking about a situation where there’s always a sale on this stove.) Now that $1000 rebate is immediately beneficial to me, and I don’t have anything extra to do to benefit from it.
I prefer Black Friday sales that are of immediate benefit to me. I certainly would prefer Inovelli’s Black Friday sale to be a reduction in price rather than smart bulbs. However, that’s my preference: it does not necessarily follow that it would have been the best strategy for Inovelli. I don’t think Inovelli’s approach is wrong… just that some of us have reasons not to be over the moon about it.
